Market Research

Despite the damp and gray weather conditions on Saturday, I headed out to the Thanksgiving Market at Clarksville Commons. After all, there are only a few more times this season to get my hands on one of these.

I can’t show you how gorgeous it was because I scarfed the entire thing on my way home. However, I did have a back up plan for Sunday.

I don’t know what Rob and Sons does during the off season but I am going to find out. (Imagine that last bit in all caps.) If you want to see why these baked goods keep coming up on the blog, check out his website to see where he’ll be selling for the rest of the season.

I had a nice chat with the proprietor of The Salvaged Stitch about my quest for a brightly colored “something” to house the new remote for our overhead light/ceiling fan in the bedroom. It is white. Our new comforter is mostly white. It has quickly become the invisible remote. She had several things that were almost-but-not-quite-right. After some back and forth I realized we were discussing the possibility that I could probably make what I wanted myself.

There was absolutely no hard sell going on here. It was kind of amazing.

The Salvaged Stitch creates personal and household items from salvaged upholstery materials. I own one of her hats. It is both beautiful and beautifully made. Interested? She’ll be at the Holiday Market at Sapwood Cellars on December 14th.

Old Line Provisions was a new (to me) vendor but I admit that I seized on the “ Old Line” part of the name and spent my entire time talking to owner/chef Corey Laub about the restaurant Old Line Kitchen & Wine Bar. My apologies for completely ignoring the artisanal jams and condiments that were probably right in front of my face.

I was curious if they are open for lunch. They are, Monday through Friday. Laub assured me that they are happy to serve women dining alone. (This is always a concern for me, raised in the last century.) I somehow walked away with a coupon for a free glass of wine, which I probably shouldn’t use if I am lunching alone. Hmm.

There’s actually more to my Market field trip but I will save it for tomorrow because it is a blog post unto itself.

One last thing: one of the main reasons I hauled myself out of bed and got dressed on Saturday morning was that I was worried that the weather would keep people away and I wanted to be supportive. Creating and maintaining successful community markets is hard work.

I needn’t have worried. The market was hopping. And, as I drove away, the sun came out.

Have a great Monday. The weather forecast suggests it will be sunny. Hopefully that will help whatever Monday is ahead.

Getting Fresh

One of my favorite days in the Spring comes when this year’s list of Farmer’s Markets is released. That happened this week. New this year are markets in Old Ellicott City and the “Merriweather Market” which, according to the address, will be located here . I mistakenly thought at first glance that it was in the new-construction part of the Merriweather District. I find the name confusing considering its actual location. I’m going to guess that this market is an initiative of the Howard Hughes Corporation because the name seems chosen more for branding purposes than anything else.  Alas, the market in Maple Lawn is gone. The thread on the markets on the County Executive’s FB page will provide you with quite the education in who actually runs the Farmers Markets vs what people often think is going on. Short answer: they are not  chosen nor run by the county. Each market is an independent entity, sometimes started by community volunteers, other times supported by local businesses...

They Can Wait

This is not a typical Saturday post. That’s because, in my community, it’s not a typical Saturday.  Oakland Mills High School, after years of deferred repair, needs massive renovation. It’s pretty simple: when you don’t fix a problem it gets bigger. The school system itself said the the OMHS school building was  "no longer conducive to learning" back in 2018.  2018 .  But Thursday the Boad of Education voted to push it out of the lineup of important projects which will be given the go-ahead to proceed soonest.  In my opinion it’s a terrible decision and sets a dangerous precedent. To explain, here’s the advocacy letter I sent in support of Oakland Mills High School. I was rather proud of it. I am writing to ask you to proceed with needed renovation at Oakland Mills High School in the most timely and comprehensive manner humanly possible. I have read the letter sent to you by the Oakland Mills Community Association and I am in complete agreement. You are extremel...

What Kids Are Thinking

It’s a Monday in February, and if you guessed that a lot of Howard County students have the new cell phone policy on their minds, you’d be right. It will mean big changes and it will be stressful, no matter how much good we hope it will do in the long run. But on this particular Monday cell phones might not be top of mind, as amazing as that seems. Some kids will go to school wondering if they or family members will be seized by ICE. Some will fear that their parents’ employment will be purged by the ongoing rampage of Elon Musk and his cronies through Federal Government. Some fear heightened and renewed racism as programs that supprted Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion are vilified and destroyed.  Some worry that it soon won’t be safe for them to use the bathroom in school anymore. It goes without saying that some kids fear going to school every day because of the prevalence of school shootings.  And look! Here’s something new to fear. That old hate group, Libs of TikTo...
