Ginger Breadgirl, AKA Pink Gingerbread Girl


Gingerbread Girl became a bit of a HoCoLocal celebrity as a spokesperson for Howard County Tourism in the early teens. She made her big comeback in conjunction with the movement and restoration of many of the old Enchanted Forest figures to Clark’s Elioak Farm on Route 108.

For a time you could take a selfie with her at the Howard County Welcome Center on Main Street in Old Ellicott City. Not sure if she’s still there. She had her own Facebook account documenting her travels.*

This girl was everywhere and (seemingly) all at once. As you can see from the opening photo she turned up at a blogtail party at the Second Chance Saloon. (She didn’t drink.)

I even bumped into her at the Inn at Norwood in Sykesville once. 



Apparently Pink Gingerbread Girl was a well-known feature of the original Enchanted Forest and a popular storybook friend for picture taking, back in the day. It appears she also has friends and relations as well.



I haven’t bumped into the lovely pink lady for quite awhile. Last night she gave me quite a start as I scrolled through social media.

Hmm…not pink enough? Either she’s not feeling at all well or this is one of her friends and relations.

The photo in question is meant to promote an event by led by the Howard County Master Gardeners.

Leave it to me to go right for Gingerbread Girl and miss the main point. 

All of that aside - - this is a great photo. None of that “everyone all lined up for the picture” nonsense. There’s definitely something happening here. 




It’s giving “…and this is the moment the crime was committed” vibes to me. What do you think?

Today is the last day of school before the Winter Break. It’s a good time to remember the far-reaching nature of our public school system. You may not have children. They Can Wait

This is not a typical Saturday post. That’s because, in my community, it’s not a typical Saturday.  Oakland Mills High School, after years of deferred repair, needs massive renovation. It’s pretty simple: when you don’t fix a problem it gets bigger. The school system itself said the the OMHS school building was  "no longer conducive to learning" back in 2018.  2018 .  But Thursday the Boad of Education voted to push it out of the lineup of important projects which will be given the go-ahead to proceed soonest.  In my opinion it’s a terrible decision and sets a dangerous precedent. To explain, here’s the advocacy letter I sent in support of Oakland Mills High School. I was rather proud of it. I am writing to ask you to proceed with needed renovation at Oakland Mills High School in the most timely and comprehensive manner humanly possible. Columbia Chance Connection

  Last night, as my husband and I were about to sit down to dinner, our front door swung open and a cheery voice announced, “I’m ba—ack!”  We weren’t expecting anyone. Clearly the only people who’d walk right in to our house would be one of our offspring. I had my reading glasses on so I wasn’t seeing too clearly. It seemed too tall for our youngest, but we knew our eldest was at work. I took off my glasses to see a friendly but confused face scanning our living room.
