Music Monday

I'm sharing my remarks from Thursday's concert of Oakland Mills Middle Schools bands and strings today. Why? Well, because budget season is upon us in the Howard County Schools, and last year it resulted in a loss of 25 per cent of elementary art and music instructional time in selected elementary schools. Think it couldn't happen to yours? Last week the Superintendent announced an increase of World Language teachers and expansion of some elements of the Model Schools program.

I strongly recommend that you pay attention to the budget process.

Good evening. I'm here tonight as the OMMS representative to Howard County Parents for School Music, which is the official advocacy group for music. education in Howard County. You can like us on Facebook, you can follow us on Twitter (HoCoMusParents; @hcpsm) and you can come to our next meeting, which is this Monday, January 13th at The East Columbia Branch library, at 7:00 pm. I want to invite you to attend if you want to learn more about how we are supporting music in our schools.

One of the things we'll be working on is preparing for our Echo Project instrument collection Day. Which will be held on January 31, 2015, from 9 - 4pm, at Mt. Hebron High School during the MS & HS Solo & Ensemble Festival. If you or anyone to know has an instrument that is no longer being used, they can donate them to the Echo Project and HCPSM will make sure that the instruments go to schools where there is the most need. The goal of the ECHO Project is to increase opportunity for participation in music.

One more thing. We're all here tonight because we believe in the power of music as a vital part of our child's education. We believe because we see the benefits: we see how music sparks energy and enthusiasm, we see how music fosters creativity and collaboration, we watch as our children develop self-discipline and perseverance, and we know that the self-confidence evident in the music classroom overflows into other classrooms and beyond. So tonight I want to stop and thank the music professionals at Oakland Mills Middle School who give so much to our children and to our entire school community: Mrs. Castrillon, Mr. Green, and Mr. Konick. Thanks for everything you do.

Getting Fresh

One of my favorite days in the Spring comes when this year’s list of Farmer’s Markets is released. That happened this week. New this year are markets in Old Ellicott City and the “Merriweather Market” which, according to the address, will be located here . I mistakenly thought at first glance that it was in the new-construction part of the Merriweather District. I find the name confusing considering its actual location. I’m going to guess that this market is an initiative of the Howard Hughes Corporation because the name seems chosen more for branding purposes than anything else.  Alas, the market in Maple Lawn is gone. The thread on the markets on the County Executive’s FB page will provide you with quite the education in who actually runs the Farmers Markets vs what people often think is going on. They Can Wait

This is not a typical Saturday post. That’s because, in my community, it’s not a typical Saturday.  Oakland Mills High School, after years of deferred repair, needs massive renovation. It’s pretty simple: when you don’t fix a problem it gets bigger. The school system itself said the the OMHS school building was  "no longer conducive to learning" back in 2018.  2018 .  But Thursday the Boad of Education voted to push it out of the lineup of important projects which will be given the go-ahead to proceed soonest.  In my opinion it’s a terrible decision and sets a dangerous precedent. To explain, here’s the advocacy letter I sent in support of Oakland Mills High School. I was rather proud of it. What Kids Are Thinking

  It’s a Monday in February, and if you guessed that a lot of Howard County students have the new cell phone policy on their minds, you’d be right. It will mean big changes and it will be stressful, no matter how much good we hope it will do in the long run. But on this particular Monday cell phones might not be top of mind, as amazing as that seems. Some kids will go to school wondering if they or family members will be seized by ICE. Some will fear that their parents’ employment will be purged by the ongoing rampage of Elon Musk and his cronies through Federal Government. Some fear heightened and renewed racism as programs that supprted Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion are vilified and destroyed.  Some worry that it soon won’t be safe for them to use the bathroom in school anymore.
