Spring Fever


 

We’ve been having a bit of a preview of warm weather of late, with just enough sunshine to start up that yearning inside me for Spring. It’s a bit chilly at this moment but there are rumors of a few days coming up with temperatures in the seventies.

It looks like Clarksville Commons is getting a jumpstart on the season by hosting a March Spring Preview Farmers Market today from ten am to two pm. 

Get an early spring preview of the farmers market season ahead!
Many of familiar favorite vendors will be there, as well as several new ones.

Confirmed vendors for the event include: 

Raw Blossom: handmade bodycare products 
The Salvaged Stitch: upcycled textiles 
Bike Werks: mobile bike repair shop
Apricity Flowers: flowers grown in Howard County
Serene Lavender Farm: locally grown lavender & lavender products
Wild Air Candle Co.: hand poured candles   
Krém au Krém, LLC: handmade bodycare products  

If you are looking for something to take the pre-spring chill off, I'd recommend coffee from Trifecto, although you also might want to check out the three adult beverage vendors on hand to see what they are offering:

The Urban Winery of Silver Spring 
Twin Valley Distillers & Brewery 

Mary’s Land Farm is offering hands-on animal experiences today. They are billing it as “Cuddle and Interact with Baby Lambs, Cow Calves.” The cuddling aspect caught my eye, I have to admit. If I were not allergic to most animals I’d be there in a heartbeat.

This is a small group interactive activity. Groups of up to 12 people will walk with Kelsey on a tour of the baby animals and interact with them as well as a visit to the Springhouse.
$15-Ticket (1 person per ticket. Children 2 and under are free)

***Tickets are for 50 minute sessions and cannot be extended due to proper care of the animals.***


Clark’s Elioak Farm will be re-opening on Friday, April 1st. No fooling. They’ll also be hosting egg hunts between April 9th - April 18th.  New on the Farm is a Fairy Forest. Take a peek. Our family has many happy memories from visits to Clark’s Elioak Farm. I’m hoping I’ll be able to make it back over there this season.

Mark your calendars: the first free Community Concert at the Chrysalis this year will be a return of Maryland Winds  under the direction of Timothy J. Holtan. They’ll be kicking off this year’s season of with a program called Music of Stage and Screen: Songs of Hope. Be there for the downbeat on Sunday, April 24th, at 5 pm. Tickets are free but you need to register here:


A reminder: tomorrow is the fundraising event for Upcycled at Lost Ark Distillery from 1-4 pm.

Getting Fresh

One of my favorite days in the Spring comes when this year’s list of Farmer’s Markets is released. That happened this week. New this year are markets in Old Ellicott City and the “Merriweather Market” which, according to the address, will be located here . I mistakenly thought at first glance that it was in the new-construction part of the Merriweather District. I find the name confusing considering its actual location. I’m going to guess that this market is an initiative of the Howard Hughes Corporation because the name seems chosen more for branding purposes than anything else.  Alas, the market in Maple Lawn is gone. The thread on the markets on the County Executive’s FB page will provide you with quite the education in who actually runs the Farmers Markets vs what people often think is going on. They Can Wait

This is not a typical Saturday post. That’s because, in my community, it’s not a typical Saturday.  Oakland Mills High School, after years of deferred repair, needs massive renovation. It’s pretty simple: when you don’t fix a problem it gets bigger. The school system itself said the the OMHS school building was  "no longer conducive to learning" back in 2018.  2018 .  But Thursday the Boad of Education voted to push it out of the lineup of important projects which will be given the go-ahead to proceed soonest.  In my opinion it’s a terrible decision and sets a dangerous precedent. To explain, here’s the advocacy letter I sent in support of Oakland Mills High School. I was rather proud of it. I am writing to ask you to proceed with needed renovation at Oakland Mills High School in the most timely and comprehensive manner humanly possible. What Kids Are Thinking

  It’s a Monday in February, and if you guessed that a lot of Howard County students have the new cell phone policy on their minds, you’d be right. It will mean big changes and it will be stressful, no matter how much good we hope it will do in the long run. But on this particular Monday cell phones might not be top of mind, as amazing as that seems. Some kids will go to school wondering if they or family members will be seized by ICE. Some will fear that their parents’ employment will be purged by the ongoing rampage of Elon Musk and his cronies through Federal Government. Some fear heightened and renewed racism as programs that supprted Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion are vilified and destroyed.  Some worry that it soon won’t be safe for them to use the bathroom in school anymore.
