The best part of waking up? Pouring that ambition in your cup because today’s Dolly Day.

The outpouring of admiration and love for the late musician and philanthropist grew into a flood of suggestions that her life be celebrated each year on 9/25 - - a nod to her song “9 to 5”. The idea seems to be catching on. California and Ohio have officially declared September 25th to be Dolly Day and other states are in the process of making that happen.

We all know you don’t need official proclamations to celebrate people you love and admire. And we certainly don’t need permission. A few invitations don’t hurt, though.

Some of the vendors at the Common Kitchen in Clarksville have special plans for the day:

Anyone ready for Dolly Day??? We are!!TacoJoint_MD inside The Common Kitchen come and enjoy our delicious Dollys Pink Drink (Strawberry Coconut Regresher), our Jolene Red Hot Jalapeño Poppers, and Our Dolly Tres Leches!!!

In a local conversation on social media, one poster shared plans for the day at Glenelg High School:

Glenelg High school is having a spirit day where students can dress team "Jolene" and wear country/western wear or team "9-5" and wear the work wear of their future profession, plus a children's book drive grade level contest (donations to a local women's shelter), Dolly songs played during passing time, and a culinary class butterfly cupcake sale to staff as a fundraiser benefitting Dolly's foundation for her Imagination Library.
Coffee provided for staff to start their day with a "Cup of Ambition." We are PUMPED!

Other suggestions included donating to the Imagination Library ($9.25?) and/or donating to a Little Free Library. I thought it might be a great day for patronizing gay- or trans-owned businesses and restaurants. Along those lines, The RBP is hosting Free Mom Hugs Craft Night for HoCo Pride from 5-8pm.

Of course there’s plenty of music to be enjoyed as you go about your day today. Ms.Parton left us with a lot of it and her desire was that it would live on after she was gone. I’m a latecomer to her music so I’ve got my work cut out for me. 

I read the following words this morning and they speak so much to me about what we are sadly missing these days and how much Dolly embodied this, purely by being herself and celebrating the innate goodness of others.

Today is the last day of school before the Winter Break. It’s a good time to remember the far-reaching nature of our public school system. You may not have children. You may have sent your children to independent schools. It matters not. You will be impacted one way or another. Yesterday I read a long thread on Facebook about several waves of illness in the schools right now. There’s influenza A and norovirus, I believe. And of course there’s COVID. These days the range of teacher gifts is wider and I have fond memories of Target gift cards which I have written about before. They Can Wait

This is not a typical Saturday post. That’s because, in my community, it’s not a typical Saturday.  Oakland Mills High School, after years of deferred repair, needs massive renovation. It’s pretty simple: when you don’t fix a problem it gets bigger. The school system itself said the the OMHS school building was  "no longer conducive to learning" back in 2018.  2018 .  But Thursday the Boad of Education voted to push it out of the lineup of important projects which will be given the go-ahead to proceed soonest.  In my opinion it’s a terrible decision and sets a dangerous precedent. To explain, here’s the advocacy letter I sent in support of Oakland Mills High School. I was rather proud of it. I am writing to ask you to proceed with needed renovation at Oakland Mills High School in the most timely and comprehensive manner humanly possible. Our library promotes literacy for adults who have come here from many places. Our library promotes accessibility to materials and opportunities. Our library is hosting multiple Harry Potter themed events?  Tell me this isn’t so. J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter book series, has and continues to use the profits from those books to advocate for laws that diminish the rights of trans people. She has and continues to use her fame to influence public opinion to view and treat trans people negatively. In short, Ms. Rowling is using the Harry Potter book series to make transgender people around the world less safe....
