Reddit is a great place to ask ask hyperlocal questions like, “Where can I park my bike in Old Ellicott City?” And the answer is:
There is a bike rack at the Ellicott City Welcome Center at 8267 Main St, Ellicott City, MD 21043. It is the old stone building (former post office) near entrance to parking lot D. In the front on either side. They are post hoop (circle on a post) type.
So now you know.
If you’ve been noticing a flurry of news stories about progress on the EC Tunnel, you’re not alone. There’s a question on Reddit for that, too.
Anyway to get a tour of the new tunnel? Would be super cool to check it out. Maybe someone knows someone who can get me in?
Why am I picturing a bunch of twelve year old kids on bikes with flashlights? (At least they’ll know where to park their bikes,) Seriously, though, middle of the night forays into tunnels may look romantic in the movies but they probably don’t end well. And I’m not sure the county has enough liability insurance to guarantee the safety of ordinary residents for tunnel tours.
Still, I’m curious. I’ll see if I can find out.
There’s been a bit of a brouhaha about using the word “historic” in reference to the return of the Old Ellicott City Clock on Main Street.
They’re putting back up the clock in Ellicott City that was washed away in the 2018 flood. People keep referring to it as ‘Historic’ they first put up the clock in 2001. That’s not historic!
Image and comment from Bluesky.
I think that’s missing the point. The floods were historic and the loss of the familiar Main Street landmark was a part of the overall trauma of that experience. Bringing the clock back is symbolic of the greater efforts to recover from the devastating floods including all the hours of work to make the Main Street community successful again. And safer, too.
That meets the historic benchmark for me. Your mileage may vary, as they say on the tinterwebs.
I read about about a walking tour that begins on Sarah’s Lane. Does anyone know who Sarah is? Also, in looking up Sarah’s Lane I came across this nugget of information:
"Mount Ida" is located at 3691 Sarah's Lane (formerly 3748 Church Road) in Ellicott City, in northeastern Howard County, Maryland.
More questions! It was Church Lane and now it is Sarah’s Lane? Help me out here. Someone out there must know the backstory on this.
Have a great day and feel free to send me any interesting Ellicott City information and/or happenings.
