HoCoLocal: Three Little Stories

I just realized that I often use the term “HoCoLocal” but I don’t think I’ve ever credited it to the source. I’m pretty sure it came into common usage through the efforts of HoCoBlogs cofounder Jessie Newburn. Truth be told, “common usage” would be generous - - I don’t see it around much but I wish I did. I like it.

Today, gleaned from this morning’s search for all things HoCoLocal, are three small stories.

1. Crocheting to benefit those in need in Howard County, Megan Knight, WMAR-2 News (1 minute, 58 seconds)

They’ve have a website*, they’ve been in the Baltimore Sun, and now they’re on television!

These high school students from Howard County are members of the group Maryland Crochet for Smiles. Members make things like blankets, sweaters, scarves and hats and give them to local charities, homeless shelters, foster homes and hospitals.

The video is just long enough for you to take a deep breath and feel good about something going on in the world.

2.  Thomas & HJ at the Other Barn, wedding highlights video, TLIC Media  (4 minutes, 46 seconds)

I’ve often wondered what an outdoor wedding would be like at the Other Barn in Oakland Mills. This highlight video tells you in a way that still photographs cannot. Whether you are curious about the space, are in need of a gentle infusion of love and hope, or simply need to immerse yourself in a day when the sun was shining, this video hits all those spots. Possibly more.

Truth in advertising: I didn’t watch to the end because I somehow got teary. And I had a blog to write.

3. Divine Lines Barber Company, Luxury Barbering Experience in Columbia, MD, Juma Richards, JRM Media (2 minutes, 19 seconds)

Divine Lines Barber Company is located in Kings Contrivance. The video tells a story, not least of which is that finding the business is a bit of a journey. The owner must be aware of this, as there is another video on their Instagram showing you exactly how to get there.

I found this piece to be especially beautiful. The care that the barber shows to the customer feels almost holy. The videographer doesn’t need to make a soundtrack that yells at the viewer about luxury services. The video shows you.

By the way, Juma Richards Media is a HoCoLocal business, too.

One last thing - - I pulled off the road yesterday to check my directions and into the parking lot of Dash In (across from what I have dubbed the “Christmas tree armory”.) I’ve heard good things about this little place but had never been there. Oh my goodness. I had a delicious cranberry chicken salad sandwich on a croissant and it was amazing. Service was friendly and helpful. My only regret is that it took me so long to get there.

I posted my positive experience on the Howard County Eats Facebook group and what followed was a general love-fest for the food and folks at Dash In.

Dash In is located at 4205 Montgomery Road, Ellicott City, MD 21043. I’m told they have an app.

Have a wonderful Monday!

Check out their Donations page - - they have been busy!

Getting Fresh

One of my favorite days in the Spring comes when this year’s list of Farmer’s Markets is released. That happened this week. New this year are markets in Old Ellicott City and the “Merriweather Market” which, according to the address, will be located here . I mistakenly thought at first glance that it was in the new-construction part of the Merriweather District. I find the name confusing considering its actual location. I’m going to guess that this market is an initiative of the Howard Hughes Corporation because the name seems chosen more for branding purposes than anything else.  Alas, the market in Maple Lawn is gone. The thread on the markets on the County Executive’s FB page will provide you with quite the education in who actually runs the Farmers Markets vs what people often think is going on. Short answer: they are not  chosen nor run by the county. Each market is an independent entity, sometimes started by community volunteers, other times supported by local businesses...

They Can Wait

This is not a typical Saturday post. That’s because, in my community, it’s not a typical Saturday.  Oakland Mills High School, after years of deferred repair, needs massive renovation. It’s pretty simple: when you don’t fix a problem it gets bigger. The school system itself said the the OMHS school building was  "no longer conducive to learning" back in 2018.  2018 .  But Thursday the Boad of Education voted to push it out of the lineup of important projects which will be given the go-ahead to proceed soonest.  In my opinion it’s a terrible decision and sets a dangerous precedent. To explain, here’s the advocacy letter I sent in support of Oakland Mills High School. I was rather proud of it. I am writing to ask you to proceed with needed renovation at Oakland Mills High School in the most timely and comprehensive manner humanly possible. I have read the letter sent to you by the Oakland Mills Community Association and I am in complete agreement. You are extremel...

What Kids Are Thinking

It’s a Monday in February, and if you guessed that a lot of Howard County students have the new cell phone policy on their minds, you’d be right. It will mean big changes and it will be stressful, no matter how much good we hope it will do in the long run. But on this particular Monday cell phones might not be top of mind, as amazing as that seems. Some kids will go to school wondering if they or family members will be seized by ICE. Some will fear that their parents’ employment will be purged by the ongoing rampage of Elon Musk and his cronies through Federal Government. Some fear heightened and renewed racism as programs that supprted Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion are vilified and destroyed.  Some worry that it soon won’t be safe for them to use the bathroom in school anymore. It goes without saying that some kids fear going to school every day because of the prevalence of school shootings.  And look! Here’s something new to fear. That old hate group, Libs of TikTo...
