Sailing Away and Life Preservers

File this under daydreams at six am…

When I am a millionaire I will get to pick the people in the Howard County Library’s Evening in the Stacks promotional videos. Heck, if I’m a multimillionaire maybe I can write the scripts!

This is not to say that I think any of this needs improving. It simply looks like so much fun that I imagine that it would be delightful to get in on the act.

Evening in the Stacks is the library system’s big ticket fundraising event. Often glamorous, always fun* - - it might be easy to forget the point of it all.

Did you know that only 54 percent of Howard County’s children enter their first year of school kindergarten-ready? (per 2023-2024 Maryland Kindergarten Readiness Assessment Report)

That number has declined since 2019 and is even lowerfor children of color, children with disabilities, and low-income households. This year, our goal is to raise $150,000 to support thevital work HCLS does to help prepare young children for kindergarten.

Libraries are uniquely positioned to help close that gap. Through early childhood classes, libraries prepare children to develop the social and emotional skills they need to succeed and graduate high school. Libraries provide stimulating, literacy rich environments for young children and provide tools to help parents and caregivers talk, read, sing, and play with their children every day.

HoCo Locals often forget that our county library system is grouped under Education. Here’s a concrete example of how their mission dovetails with K-12 education rather than compete with it (as some have suggested.)

Early childhood initiatives as well as support for early intervention are ways to get involved at a crucial time in a child’s life that can make enormous long term impact. Remember this admonition from the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu?

There comes a point where we need to stop just pulling people out of the river. We need to go upstream and find out why they’re falling in.

The library system is focusing on a place where vulnerable members of our community can so easily “fall in.” More than merely a nice thing to do, it’s also a wise investment in strengthening potential rather than just waiting until our young people are in crisis and need to be pulled out.

Can’t afford a big ticket gala? Shy? Avoiding crowded social events? You can still provide valuable support to our libraries by:

  • visiting your library
  • checking out materials
  • exploring the new website and connecting with opportunities they provide
  • attend classes and events
  • let people know you love your library
  • support the rights of free people to read freely

Anyway…the theme of this year’s event is Evening in the Stacks Sets Sail. Here’s the first of this year’s videos: Evening in the Stacks Sets Sail, Part One. For more information, and to purchase tickets, visit Evening in the Stacks at the HCLS website.

I’ll be stopping by the East Columbia branch this morning to pick up a book. I’ll let you know if I see any signs of watery adventures.

Teacher Gifts

Today is the last day of school before the Winter Break. It’s a good time to remember the far-reaching nature of our public school system. You may not have children. You may have sent your children to independent schools. It matters not. You will be impacted one way or another. Yesterday I read a long thread on Facebook about several waves of illness in the schools right now. There’s influenza A and norovirus, I believe. And of course there’s COVID. Apparently in some individual schools the rate of illness is high enough for school admin to notify parents.  When I was little the acceptable holiday gift for a teacher was one of those lovely floral handkerchief squares. (I don’t know what it was for male teachers. They were rare in my elementary years.) These days the range of teacher gifts is wider and I have fond memories of Target gift cards which I have written about before. I think it’s safe to say that giving one’s teacher Influenza, norovirus, or COVID is not the ideal holiday...

Getting Fresh

One of my favorite days in the Spring comes when this year’s list of Farmer’s Markets is released. That happened this week. New this year are markets in Old Ellicott City and the “Merriweather Market” which, according to the address, will be located here . I mistakenly thought at first glance that it was in the new-construction part of the Merriweather District. I find the name confusing considering its actual location. I’m going to guess that this market is an initiative of the Howard Hughes Corporation because the name seems chosen more for branding purposes than anything else.  Alas, the market in Maple Lawn is gone. The thread on the markets on the County Executive’s FB page will provide you with quite the education in who actually runs the Farmers Markets vs what people often think is going on. Short answer: they are not  chosen nor run by the county. Each market is an independent entity, sometimes started by community volunteers, other times supported by local businesses...

They Can Wait

This is not a typical Saturday post. That’s because, in my community, it’s not a typical Saturday.  Oakland Mills High School, after years of deferred repair, needs massive renovation. It’s pretty simple: when you don’t fix a problem it gets bigger. The school system itself said the the OMHS school building was  "no longer conducive to learning" back in 2018.  2018 .  But Thursday the Boad of Education voted to push it out of the lineup of important projects which will be given the go-ahead to proceed soonest.  In my opinion it’s a terrible decision and sets a dangerous precedent. To explain, here’s the advocacy letter I sent in support of Oakland Mills High School. I was rather proud of it. I am writing to ask you to proceed with needed renovation at Oakland Mills High School in the most timely and comprehensive manner humanly possible. I have read the letter sent to you by the Oakland Mills Community Association and I am in complete agreement. You are extremel...
