New New New! And Local

For those of you who are suffering from the baseball blues after last weekend, here’s a bit of sunshine: Orioles great Rick Dempsey has opened The Baseball Warehouse in Columbia. They celebrated their Grand Opening on Sunday.

The Baseball Warehouse, LLC is an all professional staff (Former Minor and Major League players and coaches) that specializes in private baseball instruction, coaching clinics, camps and College placement. We strive to provide the best professional instruction in the area at an affordable rate. As a staff we are committed to educating the players, coaches and parents regarding the many aspects of the game. We want to promote and better the game of baseball in Baltimore, the state of Maryland and its surrounding areas.

If you are into the local restaurant scene, you already know that Blackwall Barn and Lodge has opened in the Merriweather District. Mentions I have seen so far are divided into two categories. There are the folks who are just so excited to try out a new restaurant and are filled with the glow of the new experience. And then there are the folks who want to tell you everything that went wrong and why that new place is not so hot. I suppose this is human nature. We tend to congregate at the extremes.

Coming up this weekend in Merriweather Park at Symphony Woods:

Saturday - - Hispanic Heritage Festival, 12 - 5 pm

Sunday - - Howard County Pride Festival, 11 am - 4 pm

Both events are free but you will need to do that Eventbrite thing to register so they’ll know how many people to expect and how to assign parking. Just imagine a Columbia/HoCo where public transit was so good that you didn’t have to worry where you’d put your car when you got to The Park.

Big news from The 3rd: they’ve gotten a liquor license. They celebrated last Friday with a special Happy Hour event. I don’t know how many people will put together the concept of coworking and cocktails - - although they might - - but I can definitely see how having a liquor license would make it easier to use The 3rd as an event space. And it is a beautiful space, with an even more beautiful mission. If you haven’t checked them out, you should.

I am beginning to see Halloween yard displays in my neighborhood. Are there any near you? Let me know.

Teacher Gifts

Today is the last day of school before the Winter Break. It’s a good time to remember the far-reaching nature of our public school system. You may not have children. You may have sent your children to independent schools. It matters not. You will be impacted one way or another. Yesterday I read a long thread on Facebook about several waves of illness in the schools right now. There’s influenza A and norovirus, I believe. And of course there’s COVID. Apparently in some individual schools the rate of illness is high enough for school admin to notify parents. When I was little the acceptable holiday gift for a teacher was one of those lovely floral handkerchief squares. (I don’t know what it was for male teachers. They were rare in my elementary years.) These days the range of teacher gifts is wider and I have fond memories of Target gift cards which I have written about before. I think it’s safe to say that giving one’s teacher Influenza, norovirus, or COVID is not the ideal holiday...

They Can Wait

This is not a typical Saturday post. That’s because, in my community, it’s not a typical Saturday. Oakland Mills High School, after years of deferred repair, needs massive renovation. It’s pretty simple: when you don’t fix a problem it gets bigger. The school system itself said the the OMHS school building was "no longer conducive to learning" back in 2018. 2018 . But Thursday the Boad of Education voted to push it out of the lineup of important projects which will be given the go-ahead to proceed soonest. In my opinion it’s a terrible decision and sets a dangerous precedent. To explain, here’s the advocacy letter I sent in support of Oakland Mills High School. I was rather proud of it. I am writing to ask you to proceed with needed renovation at Oakland Mills High School in the most timely and comprehensive manner humanly possible.
