Move Over, Fantasy Island


 

You know their names: Gillian’s Island, Fantasy Island, Temptation Island, Love Island. Well, they can all just move over. There’s a new island in town.

Cul de sac island.

I did a double take upon reading this post from the the good folks at OMCA because for a brief moment I thought the term was redundant. In other words, that the island was what made it a cul de sac.

Au contraire. Merriam Webster defines cul de sac as “a street or passage closed at one end. Example: Our house is located on a quiet cul-de-sac.

I guess that islands are an extra. I went looking for the origin of cul de sac islands and found this friendly conversation on Cyburbia, where they are referred to as “landscape circles.” (It has nowhere near the romantic quality of “cul de sac islands” IMHO.) 

I still didn’t track down an origin story, however.

I do know that cul de sacs themselves are intended to slow down thru-traffic. They were also sold as providing safe places for children to play.

Not sure how that applies to landscape circles. Do children incorporate them into their play?

Last one to Cul de Sac island is a rotten egg!

Some time in the way back when, Columbia/HoCo had a blog called Live from the Cul de Sac. I have been trying to find traces of it for years. My efforts have apparently not been in vain because I discovered this morning that Google’s AI has hallucinated me into the narrative.

This is creepy stuff.



Anyway, back to the island. This has got to be the most idyllic, escape-from-reality example of the landscape circle genre that I have ever seen. 



My compliments to the cul de sac neighbors who have created and maintained this outstanding oasis. The photographer is to be commended, as well. This is a great shot.

Has Columbia ever attempted a Neighborhood Cul de Cac Tour where HoCo locals could see the best in Island design and execution? Could it be the next local reality show? I’m imagining us all glued to our tvs for the drama.

Today is the last day of school before the Winter Break. It’s a good time to remember the far-reaching nature of our public school system. You may not have children. They Can Wait

This is not a typical Saturday post. That’s because, in my community, it’s not a typical Saturday.  Oakland Mills High School, after years of deferred repair, needs massive renovation. It’s pretty simple: when you don’t fix a problem it gets bigger. The school system itself said the the OMHS school building was  "no longer conducive to learning" back in 2018.  2018 .  But Thursday the Boad of Education voted to push it out of the lineup of important projects which will be given the go-ahead to proceed soonest.  In my opinion it’s a terrible decision and sets a dangerous precedent. To explain, here’s the advocacy letter I sent in support of Oakland Mills High School. I was rather proud of it. I am writing to ask you to proceed with needed renovation at Oakland Mills High School in the most timely and comprehensive manner humanly possible. Columbia Chance Connection

  Last night, as my husband and I were about to sit down to dinner, our front door swung open and a cheery voice announced, “I’m ba—ack!”  We weren’t expecting anyone. Clearly the only people who’d walk right in to our house would be one of our offspring. I had my reading glasses on so I wasn’t seeing too clearly. It seemed too tall for our youngest, but we knew our eldest was at work. I took off my glasses to see a friendly but confused face scanning our living room.
