A Very Special Episode of Labor Day

This year’s Labor Day post is for the people you don’t meet until you need them. They do things you wouldn’t have imagined you would ever need.

The people who shepherd a frightened family member through a traumatic trip to the ER. The people who help you coordinate home care when you know absolutely nothing about what to do and what you need.

The people who deliver and set up the hospital bed.

Physical therapists. Occupational therapists. The people whose job is it to keep taking X-rays while trying not to cause pain.

And, most of all: the carers. You definitely aren’t going to meet them under ordinary circumstances.

You are so exhausted that you have contemplated walking out into traffic just to end the continual fear that you are doing something wrong. You desperately need help and you are afraid that sharing the load is shirking your responsibility or means that you don’t care as much as your ought to.

Our culture treats this kind of care work as something quite low - - unskilled, even. Anyone could do it.

This is deeply wrong. Not just factually incorrect but morally reprehensible.

Carers come into your home with experience and willingness. They are knowledgeable about things that can make a world of difference to you and to the person you care about.

  • feeding
  • washing
  • soothing
  • listening
  • interacting
  • cheering
  • encouraging
  • protecting
  • cleaning
  • coordinating
In this country many carers have come here from other places and are doing the work no one else wants to do. They may not look like you or speak like you or practice the same religion as you do. But, let me tell you: the religion of care is universal.

After the last year I have decided that these are the folks who should be the highest paid and most respected rather than demeaned and discriminated against.

The most basic need anyone has in this life is care. And professional carers know how to give your loved one a shower without breaking them, wrangle high-tech hospital beds and cantankerous tray tables, encourage a fragile and uncertain client to get dressed and sit in their own yard to enjoy the weather and connect with their neighbors, know what things are to be expected and which ones you should call the doctor about…

You don’t know how much you need that. Until you really, really need it.

Our system is not set up to give workers like this a fair shake. It doesn't take long to figure this out.
Their lives are harder, hours longer, employment choices more limited. For most of us, the time we will need carers is finite. We are living through a crisis for a time. At some point that will change.

The carers keep caring. If not for us, then for someone else. They move from our crisis to someone else’s.

Today is Labor Day. It’s a national holiday. I can assure you that there will be carers working while many of us have the day off.

I salute them. I’m grateful for them. They deserve our respect.

Teacher Gifts

Today is the last day of school before the Winter Break. It’s a good time to remember the far-reaching nature of our public school system. You may not have children. You may have sent your children to independent schools. It matters not. You will be impacted one way or another. Yesterday I read a long thread on Facebook about several waves of illness in the schools right now. There’s influenza A and norovirus, I believe. And of course there’s COVID. Apparently in some individual schools the rate of illness is high enough for school admin to notify parents.  When I was little the acceptable holiday gift for a teacher was one of those lovely floral handkerchief squares. (I don’t know what it was for male teachers. They were rare in my elementary years.) These days the range of teacher gifts is wider and I have fond memories of Target gift cards which I have written about before. I think it’s safe to say that giving one’s teacher Influenza, norovirus, or COVID is not the ideal holiday...

They Can Wait

This is not a typical Saturday post. That’s because, in my community, it’s not a typical Saturday.  Oakland Mills High School, after years of deferred repair, needs massive renovation. It’s pretty simple: when you don’t fix a problem it gets bigger. The school system itself said the the OMHS school building was  "no longer conducive to learning" back in 2018.  2018 .  But Thursday the Boad of Education voted to push it out of the lineup of important projects which will be given the go-ahead to proceed soonest.  In my opinion it’s a terrible decision and sets a dangerous precedent. To explain, here’s the advocacy letter I sent in support of Oakland Mills High School. I was rather proud of it. I am writing to ask you to proceed with needed renovation at Oakland Mills High School in the most timely and comprehensive manner humanly possible. I have read the letter sent to you by the Oakland Mills Community Association and I am in complete agreement. You are extremel...

F ³: Who Belongs at the Library?

One of these things is not like the others One of these things doesn't belong Can you tell which thing is not like the other By the time we finish our song?* Did you guess which thing is not like the others? Did you guess which thing doesn't belong? If you guessed this thing is not like the others Then you're absolutely right.  Our library promotes equity. Our library promotes literacy for adults who have come here from many places. Our library promotes accessibility to materials and opportunities. Our library is hosting multiple Harry Potter themed events?  Tell me this isn’t so. J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter book series, has and continues to use the profits from those books to advocate for laws that diminish the rights of trans people. She has and continues to use her fame to influence public opinion to view and treat trans people negatively. In short, Ms. Rowling is using the Harry Potter book series to make transgender people around the world less safe....
